To the untrained eye, the role of a student officer may appear to be ambivalent to that of a slightly-glorified student: we turn up to ‘work’, attend various club nights and have rather unflattering photographs appear on posters across the college - all in the name of representation. Indeed, upon hearing the news that I had been successful in my very own election at King’s, my own mother couldn’t hide her astonishment that I was getting paid a yearly salary to, at least in their eyes, organise parties.
But I don’t organise parties.
In fact, if I did, then the King’s world would know about it. They’d be infamous - at a recent house party, I came the closest I’ve ever been to receiving any sort of status as social-convener; although this was swiftly ended when, after leaving my laptop unattended, my iTunes drifted into some nineties classics. Sadly, Ace of Base (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtIuPApOP-E) and The Corrs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eBkXXSbwlE) weren’t enough to entertain the gathered masses. Oh, the perils of shuffle.
Of course, whilst I may be void of a desirable set of social skills and any form of musical dexterity, one thing which I can claim to be very good at is the undertaking of a compliance audit. I know, like the man from a Lynx advert - it’s little wonder that I’m such a hit with the opposite sex.
Thankfully, my role as President, doubling up as Chair of the organisation’s trustee board, requires a significant amount of this and, dry as the subject may be, summer is the ideal time to meander through a hefty workload. Indeed, it doesn’t just stop there - in the last week alone, we’ve sought direction on brand awareness, examined our organisational structures and received a further to-do list courtesy of KCLSU’s recent charity registration. Needless to say, I can assure you that this is all essential stuff if we’re to have a students’ union King’s can be proud of.
So mum, I do earn every penny - although I have to say, I am looking forward to that party season.
